I grew up in Sydney, Australia and now live in Seattle. I’ve spent the last 20 years as a professional writer, editor, teacher, and coach.

Writing & Editing:

  • Author of six novels, including The Last Painting of Sara de Vos, a New York Times bestseller and a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice.

  • Fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Book Industry Awards, the Texas Institute of Letters, and the Washington State Center for the Book.

  • Essays, reviews, and short fiction in numerous publications, including The Atlantic, Texas Monthly, the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and The Australian.

  • Various editing and writing roles within private industry, including as Editor-in-Chief at Google.

Teaching & Coaching:

  • Worked with a broad range of writers to help bring their projects and their writing craft to the next level, resulting in several published, bestselling, and award-winning books.

  • Have taught graduate writing in the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers since 2008 and currently serve on the academic board.

  • Have taught writing at the University of Texas at Austin, Southern Methodist University, and Rice University.
